The Rug Quilt Quilt-A-Long: Sashing

The Rug Quilt Quilt-A-Long: Sashing

We are almost done! Today we will be adding sashing to our blocks, making rows and sewing the quilt top together. All we have left, after today will be the border. If you are using scrappy whites I think it will look best if the whites are all the same for the sashing. Don’t forget to head over to Instagram and share your progress with #theRugQuiltALong and #trqalweek5 (each week this hashtag changes). The winner of step four is @cristinalovescrafts. Congratulations and thanks for joining us. You are on a roll!

  • Cut four 3″ strips and cut off the salvage.
  • Cut the strips into 14.25″ rectangles for a total of twelve.
  • On a full block (teal), pin and sew a 14.25” strip to both sides. Press flat. Repeat for a total of two.
  • On a half block, pin and sew a 14.25” strip to top. Press flat. Repeat for a total of four.
  • On a half black, pin and sew a 14.25” strip to the bottom. Press flat. Repeat for a total of two.
  • On a quartered block (teal), pin on and sew a 14.25” strip. Press flat. Repeat for a total of two.

NOTE: When sewing the sashing onto the blocks, work on the side with the seams. Then you can control how the corners turn out and avoid chopping them off with the seam.

  • Sew together the blocks to make the following rows.
    .
  • Cut five 3″ strips and cut off the salvage.
  • On the shortest side of two strips, pin and sew together.
  • Cut one strip into the following rectangles – two measuring 3” x 20” and two measuring 3”x 16”.
  • On the shortest side of one full strip, pin and sew a 3″ x 16″ rectangle to it for a total of two.

NOTE: Sew the sashing to the longest edge first. Make sure you have enough extra fabric on both sides  of row to trim off and make the edge straight.

  • Pin and sew the sashing to both sides of Row 2. Cut sashing edge straight.  Pin and sew that sashing to both sides of Row 5. Cut sashing edge straight.  Press flat.
  • Pin and sew the sashing to the longest side of Row 3. Cut sashing edge straight.   Press flat.
  • Pin and sew Row 1 and Row 2 together. Press flat. Then pin and sew Row 2 and Row 3 together. Press flat.
  • Pin and sew Row 6 and Row 5 together. Press flat. Then pin and sew Row 5 and Row 4 together. Press flat.
