From a Pile of Whites to Whimsical Fish
Lately, I’ve noticed an abundance of white fabric scraps piling up in my stash—more than any other color! While sorting through some focus fabrics from my Quilt Guild for charity blocks, inspiration struck. The playful cat print is the perfect contrast to a sardine-themed quilt block I’ve been wanting to make. Last weekend offered an ideal break between projects, so I took the opportunity for a little creative refresh—a “quilty jolt,” if you will. That spark led to the creation of a free quilt block pattern that’s perfect for putting your scraps to use.
Scrappy Background Quilt Block
I started by designing a few paper templates for my fish block, which I shared with my email subscribers. Since then, I’ve refined the templates, added an extra fish design, and included instructions for how to use them. You can now find the updated version in my shop for just a few dollars.

It all began with a test fish. I needed a quilt block as a base for topstitching the fish and decided to make the background scrappy—because let’s be honest, using up scraps is deeply satisfying. While I was working through the idea, I made my pieces oversized so I could trim them down to twelve in a half inches. But for you, I’ve created a more precise, beginner-friendly block.
