Bird Quilt

There’s something magical about watching a quilt come to life—especially when it’s inspired by the graceful motion of birds. That’s exactly what Drift is all about. This pattern was born from a love of organic movement that is mesmerizing and intriguing. Flowing curves are designed to mimic the quiet elegance of birds gliding on a breeze. It’s the perfect bird quilt.

One of my absolute favorite parts of designing quilt patterns is seeing what others make with them. I’m always inspired by the color choices, fabric placement, and how each maker interprets the instructions. When my pattern testers share their finished quilts, my heart skips a beat—or two, or three!

The Drift Quilt pattern comes in three sizes. And while I’ve shown off the throw size, you haven’t yet seen the baby size—and it’s something special. This version features four birds arranged in a perfectly symmetrical layout. It’s sweet, balanced, and makes a statement in a smaller format.

I feel so honored and blessed to be able to share this quilt. Let me introduce you to another one of my pattern testers.

I’m Debbie from @soda.pop.quilts 🙂 I started seriously quilting about 10 years ago when a friend suggested I try a pattern. Previously I had done jean patchwork quilts and panels, but I had never even thought of, or really known, that patterns existed. I was overwhelmed, but she kept insisting, gave me a pattern, picked out fabric from a box I had been given, and I was hooked!

I couldn’t believe that all you had to do was follow the instructions – and voilà – a magic quilt!  My quilty neighbor told me, “Debbie, you are mathematical… you can quilt.” I thought, “Hmmm… I am mathematical, I can quilt.”  making quilt after quilt, trying new patterns and learning new things. I taught high school math, and my husband coached the football team, so I gave away baby quilts to new arrivals of former students, former football boys, neighbors, charities, and my own family.  Thankfully, after 10 years, I am just as addicted!  I get a rush every time the blocks start to come together and I can see the quilt pattern emerge!

Drift is such a clearly written, beautiful pattern that comes together much more quickly than I expected.  The pattern guides you easily through the curves, and before you know it, you have a finished top!  This quilt delivers a stunning impact without stunning effort – truly incredible!

The Fabrics

The fabrics Debbie chose for her bird quilt are nothing short of spectacular. For the birds, she used prints from the West Palm Beach collection, designed by Jennifer Paganelli for Windham Fabrics. This line is colorful, vibrant, and absolutely perfect for the Drift pattern. It even features birds in the design, along with cheerful flowers and playful dots. It brings so much life and movement to the quilt!

For the background, she selected a rich, dark green spark fabric by Melody Miller of Ruby Star Society. This one is extra special to me. It was actually a gift I had sent her for a previous pattern test. Seeing it used in this quilt made my heart so happy. Isn’t it just the perfect backdrop for those spunky birds?

🔧 The Templates

To make this bird quilt come together in a snap, I created custom acrylic templates. Neon green and etched to perfection this is the perfect item to get for the project. These templates take the guesswork out of cutting. Allowing quilters to focus on the fun part—piecing everything together and watching their quilt take shape.
