The Peppermint Way Quilt

I have been quilting my little heart out hoping to have this baby quilt ready for pattern release day. The photos were taken last week, so I finished just in time. The Peppermint Way quilt pattern and table runner is a Christmas project, but it looks fabulous with everyday fabrics, too. Click here to download your own copy of the free pattern. The pattern has a lot of different size option and the one featured here is one that I am making for a coworker that just had a baby girl. This baby quilt is sized for a crib. What do you think of the 2 x 4 block layout? I am really happy with how fast I was able to put the whole quilt and pattern together. My goal for this year is to get half of my UFOs done and I am feeling good because my UFO list has gotten shorter, not longer.

The Fabric

I like to think of this quilt as Tutti Frutti because the colors used in the quilt are so sweet.  About two years ago, I was in a charm pack club at my LQS. The majority of the fabric used in the rings (other then the cats and the Santa and, well, a few others) come from the charms I got from the Loose Change Club. The shop made its own charm packs for the club so it is a hodgepodge of lines, colors, and designs.

My favorite print is a yellow lemon slice design that is so fresh. Lemonade would be the perfect drink on these hot Tucson days. I was happy to get rid of some of my stash. The background is a grey metallic dots fabric I bought at JoAnn’s. I just love how they reflect the light. It’s as if they glow.

The back is a super soft minky from Shannon Fabrics. It is so nice to snuggle up to. This also comes from my stash. It is a remnant from my Corkscrew quilt. That brings me to the binding. I am so in love with a print from Me+You by Hoffman Fabrics: 102 Zebra Black Print Batik; a type of fabric that I am normally not into, however this print looks like tiny hearts to me and I adore it. I used it for the first time in my Virtual Quilt Challenge quilt from Sewtopia.

The Quilting

With all of the courage I have gained from classes and practice over the past year and a half, I decided to quilt this baby quilt on my domestic machine. For some crazy reason I chose pebbles. The pattern mimics the curves of the rings so it works well; however, it was very time consuming. I am not good at small spaces yet, but I will get there.

I just love how this quilt turned out! What do you think? Do you like the Christmas version more or this frutti version more? I was worried about using the minky; I thought that the minky would not quilt well with such a saturated pattern, but I was so wrong. It is still soft and wonderful.
