I mean… quilting AND a tropical vacation? I just said YES!
I’m Teaching Lucky Stripes! I am absolutely over the moon that I get to teach one of my own patterns on this cruise. It is a jelly-roll-friendly quilt that you may have already seen in Make Modern Magazine, Issue 68. You can also find the pattern in my shop.
I love this quilt because it gives you a chance to dip your toes into piecing triangles without being too complex. Perfect for a beginner. And if you grab the acrylic templates to go with the pattern, it comes together even quicker!
So let’s get into the details of this quilt.
The Fabric For The Perfect Day Quilting Cruise Quilt
The moment I saw Calathea from Ruby Star Society, I was immediately drawn to it. I am definitely a plant lover, so a fabric collection filled with plants is guaranteed to end up in my sewing room. This collection happens to be a collaborative line, which means we get gems from the different designers all in one collection.

Quilting The Lucky Stripes Quilt
Of course, I used Hobbs batting because that is my go-to. I brought a roll of Poly-Down batting into my shop in about a year ago and I am almost finished with the entire roll! Now I am trying to decide what I should buy next. Any suggestions or requests?
I have been having so much fun exploring my q20 Bernina lately and experimenting with different ways to use the same motif in each quilt I am while making each one distinct.
Recently, I have been on a scallops, humps, and bumps kick.

The Quilt Back
Because I wanted to take this quilt to Asheville for a class I taught, I made the easiest quilt back possible, using fabrics I had on hand and simply pieced one fabric together and called it good.
However, if I could do it over again, I probably would have used the wide back from this collection.
The large leaf pattern is so good and would have been the perfect complement to the front of the quilt.
Sometimes the easiest quilt back wins — but sometimes there is a wide back that is just too pretty to ignore!
Over the next few weeks I will be diving into how I finished this quilt so come back next Tueday to talk about facing and the week after, let’s explore scallop quilting.
It was such a joy to make the Lucky Stripes pattern, and I feel so honored to be able to share it with you. So let’s spend a week somewhere beautiful, explore new places, eat good food, meet other quilters, and still have time to do something you love. This time, we’ll be making Lucky Stripes, and I can’t wait to see all the different fabrics and color combinations you guys create. There is something pretty special about starting a quilt on vacation and coming home with not only a new project, but a whole collection of memories stitched into it.
