Get your party drink ready… I have my extra-strong coffee ☕ in hand, and I am so excited to finally share all the details about my newest quilt pattern — Constellation Crumb Quilt. KEEP READING UNTIL THE END AND YOU WILL FIND THE PARTY FUN!
Let’s Celebrate A Study in Color, Scraps, and Letting Go

This quilt is truly a study in so many things.
First, it is a study in color and how to create a successful gradient. The design moves from incredibly light pink all the way to a deep, rich purple. In between those two extremes are bright pinks, orange-pinks, berry tones, soft purples, and many subtle transitions that make the stars glow.
In the pattern, I walk you through how to organize your fabrics so you can create a smooth color flow without feeling overwhelmed by your scrap piles.
The second study is crumb piecing. This technique can feel a little hard to wrap your head around because it is less structured than traditional patchwork. But once it clicks, it becomes incredibly fun — and freeing.
There is something magical about sewing together small, leftover bits of fabric and watching them transform into bold, modern shapes. Crumb piecing encourages you to let go of perfection, trust your instincts, and simply enjoy the creative journey.
And yes… this quilt helped me put a major dent in my pink and white scraps.

Inspired by Scrap Happens
This design fits perfectly into my Scrap Happens lecture and classes, where we embrace the chaos, creativity, and joy of sewing with scraps. I taught this lecture and workshop back in January, and it looked a little different than in past years.
Previously, I taught the class over three separate days. This time, it was condensed into just one full day, which challenged me to completely rethink and restructure the experience. I simplified the end goal with just one project, but I still show off many other ideas on how you can use your scraps. This quilt becoming a major talking point and hopefully it’s own class.

I love your quilt! The pattern, the fabrics used, AND the quilting. I want to know though – why you didn’t choose a scrappy binding and if you use a straight-grain or bias binding.
Elisabeth DeMoo
> CaroleHappy Thursday. Thank you so much for the question!! That is a great observation. The pieces for my binding were actually leftover pieces from the Flower Farm Quilt Along I have been participating in over the last six months, hosted by the Fat Quarter Shop, along with a red strawberry fabric. I think it is three red fabrics that I alternate between, so it is somewhat scrappy. The pieces I used are cut on the straight grain. I joined the pieces together at a 45-degree angle. If I remember correctly, most of them are about 18″ long. On a quilt with so many seams, I decided to give it a little more structure in the binding to reduce seam bulk. I do love piecing smaller strips in my binding with multiple fabrics and have definitely done scrappier bindings like my Fields of Flower quilt. For that one, I was using every bit of my leftover 2.5″ strips. Hopefully that answers your question!!
Tammy

Beautiful pattern and I really like your color choice. I have heard the term “crumb quilt”but didn’t understand what it really meant. I like that the star points “float” so they are foolproof for an inexperienced quilter like me. Thanks for the giveaway!

Elysia
I’m amazed at the glowing effect! What a gorgeous ombré and unique piecing. I love how the stars’ points end a bit away from the edge of the block so they don’t disappear into the seam allowance (not that that’s ever happened to me 🫣)!
