There’s something about woven fabric that just feels extra special—and this new quilt has completely stolen my heart.

A Quilt Made with Fableism Supply Co’s Charming Wovens
For months, each time I went into my LQS, Quilt Basket, I would buy a couple of half yards of some enchanting fabrics. I am absolutely smitten with them. I think most of them are from the Lucky Loom fabric line, but there are some from other lines as well. The colors are rich and dimensional, with the most incredible stripes and plaids woven right in. The purples, oranges, and yellows interact together in a way that feels warm, cozy, and just a little bit playful.
Honestly? They make me think of sherbet. 🍊🍋🍇
The texture of woven fabric adds so much depth and softness to the quilt, making it perfect for all the snuggles in the world. But woven fabrics can shrink a bit more than standard quilting cotton. After talking with the ladies at the shop and learning that the bolt states a shrinkage amount, I knew it was something I had to do, which goes against every instinct and experience I have had with prewashing.
I tried it early in my quilting journey and didn’t like it one bit. What I pulled out of the dryer was such a mess!! A wad of threads and tangled fabric, and I was so upset that I never wanted to do it again… until now.
When I decided on making this modern pinwheel quilt, I intended it to be the project I worked on in the evenings during the Sewcation I taught at in Asheville, NC. The day before I left, I was washing fabrics and trying to get them starchy crisp. I used the last bottle of Best Press I had left in the variety pack, which was Rose. I sprayed each fabric wet on both sides, let them dry, and ironed them. They were not as stiff as I wanted them, so I did the whole process over again. They still were not how I wanted them, but I decided to proceed with cutting and prepping the project for the road.
The crazy part is that when I pulled out the project to work on, I instantly was consumed by the rose scent and felt like everyone else could smell it too. The room was a perfume-free room, and I definitely felt like the scent was over the acceptable level, so I put the project back into my plastic bag. I heard a couple people sneeze or cough when I tried to work on it, making me believe that the scent was causing allergies for the few left in the room for late-night sewing. So… I really didn’t make any progress. Live and learn, right? Needless to say, I now have 4 gallons of the scent-free Best Press.

Why I Love This Modern Pinwheel Quilt
This design really lets the woven stripes and plaids shine. Each block feels like it’s spinning with color, and the white background gives the bold hues room to breathe. It’s modern, but still warm. Graphic, but still soft.
If you’ve been wanting to try woven fabrics but felt a little nervous (like I was), consider this your gentle nudge. They add texture, movement, and personality in the most beautiful way.

The Finishing Touches
Once the top was finished, it was time for something that has become my favorite part—quilting it on my Bernina Q20. There’s something magical about watching texture appear as you stitch.
In the white background, I used Aurifil thread to quilt soft, flowing swirls. The movement of the swirls contrasts beautifully with the structure of the pinwheels. Inside them, I tried straight-line ruler quilting for the third time ever, this time feeling so much more confident.
As usual, Hobbs batting is what is inside—a lush Poly-Down is what I currently have a roll of, and I do love it. Hobbs always delivers that perfect balance—soft and cozy, but with enough structure to really highlight the quilting. The swirls puff ever so slightly, while the ruler work stays crisp.

And the back? Ohhh, the back might secretly be my favorite part. I love when a back is as special as the front, so for this one I chose my favorite plaid from the top of the quilt. There’s something about turning a quilt over and seeing the bold plaid that makes my heart happy. It feels intentional, cozy, and just a little bit unexpected.

A Binding Worth Celebrating

I didn’t want the binding to be an afterthought. With fabrics like these, the finish needed to feel just as thoughtful.
So I used a decorative stitch on the binding—making the edge as special as the fabric itself. That little detail frames the quilt beautifully and adds just one more layer of texture and personality.
Sometimes it’s the smallest details that make a quilt feel complete.

Between the Fableism wovens, the sherbet-inspired purples, oranges, and yellows, the swirl-and-ruler quilting combination, and that plaid backing… I truly couldn’t love this modern pinwheel quilt more.
I can’t wait to see what you make with this pattern. If you sew one, be sure to tag me @brownbirddesigns (or send me emails edemoo@brownbirdesigns.com) so I can cheer you on. 💛
