Good morning quilty friends!! Today, I have a quick and easy tutorial for you. It is for all of those stamp collectors out there. I know I have a few of them in my life and that triggers my desire to buy the stamps that are designed. You know instead of that printed post office stamp label. Give me the dogs, the love stamp, railroads, even Looney Tunes . . . All the stamps. Wacky or somber… I actually miss the ones that you fold over and rip apart. But my tongue doesn’t miss the weird aftertaste. LOL. I call this the Collector of Stamps Quilt Tutorial. It uses a pillow panel created by Anderson Design Group for Riley Blake Designs. It is from the National Parks fabric collection. The posters are perfect for this project, very picturesque!
Fabric requirements:
Background fabric – ¾ yard cut into three 7 ½” strips
subcut into 22 4” rectangles and four 7 ½ squares
Black fabric – ½ yard cut into 3” strips, cut into 44 squares
Panel – trimmed to 21 ½” x 18″
Collector of Stamps Quilt Tutorial
Finished size: 35 1/2″ x 32″
Draw a diagonal line down the center of all 44 3” squares.
Pin a 3” square to the right corner of a 7 ½” x 4” rectangle. Make sure the drawn line touches the edges of the rectangle. Sew on the line. Trim ¼” away from the line. Iron seam toward the 3” square side.
Pin a 3” square to the left corner of a 7 ½” x 4” rectangle. Make sure the drawn line touches the edges of the rectangle. Sew on the line. Trim ¼” away from the line. Iron seam toward the rectangle.
Repeat for a total of 22 rectangles.
Take two rectangles, place them on top of each other RST. Seams will nest. Pin and sew on the long edge. Iron open. Repeat for a total of 10 rectangle sets.
Row of five rectangles: Pin and sew two rectangle sets together plus one extra rectangle. Iron open. On both edges of the row of five rectangles, pin and sew a 7 ½” sqare. Repeat for a total of two.
Row of six rectangles: Pin and sew three rectangle sets together. Iron open.
Putting it together
Pin and sew the row of six rectangles to the left vertical edge of the panel. Pin and sew the other row of six rectangles to the right vertical edge of the panel. Press open. Pin and sew a row of five rectangles to the top and bottom edge of the panel. Press open.
I created this project, the Collector of Stamps Quilt Tutorial, to be used within the Summer Bunting Quilt. This would be great finished by itself as a wall hanging. Someday I hope to create four large stamps and lay them out 2 by 2. This would create a nice sized quilt. Please let me know if you have any questions.
