Dorothy’s Journey Fabric

Dorothy’s Journey Fabric

This month I have been following the yellow brick road and it has taken me to Oz. This nostalgic collection features characters like Toto, the Cowardly Lion, Scarecrow, the Tin Man, witches, flying monkeys, and of course Dorothy. I love everything Jill Howarth creates. Her drawings are absolutely beautiful. These fabrics have yellows, pinks, hints of reds, teals, blues, greens, and black. My favorite color of all are the pops of metallic silver. I am such a fan of this collection called Dorothy’s Journey created for Riley Blake Designs.

I wanted just a little bit of the whole line, so I got the jelly roll plus two fat quarters to add a little extra zing. Don’t you just love the artwork?? I think the Tin Man is my favorite. I just love how he looks in silver and gray. All of these colors and fabrics are perfect for a girl, but with the right fabric choice it can even work for boys.

Working on cutting batting for a jelly roll rug

Dorothy’s Journey Fabric and Jelly Roll Rug

I have been wanting to make a Jelly Roll Rug because of my excess of batting scraps. This project was the perfect scrap buster for that. It really tamed my fluffy endless pile that I keep on top of my sewing cabinet. I had a lot of fun with the rolled ball that we created while making the rug.

This was the first time making the rug and I think I have room for improvement. I didn’t keep it as flat as I should have, letting it hang at the end. I had thought my sewing cabinet and portable table would work. But I wasn’t paying enough attention at the end. I should have listened. Still, I love it and will get some great use out of it. I definitely will make another rug I just need to collect some more batting scraps. Something that happens all too quickly around here.

To bring the room together I replaced a few of the Dorothy’s Journey strips with some fabric from my stash. I also had two fat quarters. I used them to embellish a towel, washcloth and shower curtain.

For the curtain, I fussy cut out the faces of the characters and EPPed them to simple squares. After pressing the edges, I top stitched them to fabric scraps using a thick embroidery thread.

Here are all the projects in my small bathroom

For the towels, I sewed down a strip of fabric leaving about a 1/2″ inch on each edge unsewn (for the seam). Then I pulled the fabric over the seam and ironed it flat. After tucking all the edges under I finished it with a top stitch. I love how they turned out. Sew much fun in this tiny room!!
