Anyone out there want a free quilt pattern? How about a great summer project that is more than simply a project, it’s a challenge. Do you want a chance to win a big bundle of fabric? All these are possible if you participate in this year’s Row by Row. That’s right! Row by Row started in 2011 and participation has rapidly grown. In Arizona, there are almost forty shops that will all be carrying different patterns. This year’s theme is Sew Musical. I can give you a sneak peek at one of the Rows here in Tucson, AZ. The pattern name is Sewing Sound Waves Row by Row.
The Row by Row Challenge
If you have decided that you are all in and want to take this challenge on, do a little research. That way you don’t drive out of your way and go to a shop that doesn’t offer a Row. This link will help you find participating stores. You have to physically go into the store to pick up the pattern. They will not ship it to you or sell it online. All you have to do is ask for their Row between June 21 and September 4. Quilt your heart out. Then bring your completed quilt into one of the 2018 participating shops.
The quilt must use at least eight different rows from eight different 2018 Row by Row patterns. If you are the first one to bring it into the store, you will win a stash of 25 fat quarters. (That’s 6 1/4 yards of fabric!) If you use that store’s Row in your quilt, you will win a bonus prize. The time period to do this is September 5 through October 31.
Sewing Sound Waves Row by Row
This year I was asked to design a row for Sew Hip. Absolutely honored, I started brainstorming and sketching, and I am very happy with how it turned out. Patterns with sewing machines make me smile and Sew Hip has a sewing machine in their logo. The sewing machine had to be in the pattern. I feel like there are elements that make it fun and easy. It’s a pattern that you can finish quickly. Sewing Sound Waves Row by Row is the name that I chose for the pattern.
The left side of the row there is a bargello inspired sound wave. Get it? Sew Musical. Sewing machine sound waves. When my sewing machine is humming, it’s music to my ears. (I know, I am a goofball.) Cacti are also featured in this pattern. I am totally obsessed. If you have seen my Instagram stories lately, you know what I mean. I love the colors, too. I tried to capture the spirit of Arizona. What do you think? Did I get it right? I finished it off with Aurifil thread and floss. Using different stitches to create textures and interest. Sew Hip will be selling kits of this fabric pull, so get them before they run out.
Sew Hip is a fresh and modern sewing boutique in Tucson. Their passion is on teaching and they offer a variety of classes (here is link to the schedule) that focus on craft and clothing projects. With multiple sewing machines in house to learn on, it makes it easy for an beginning sewist to excel. They have a wonderful selection of luscious apparel fabrics as well as fun quilting fabrics. The owners, Brittany and Kristin, are so sweet. You will find them working there on any given day, teaching classes and cutting fabric. It is a treat to visit especially because of the accessories they carry like the enamel pins on the counter.

The Tucson Route
If you decide to do a shop hop, Tucson has three must-visit shops all in a row. Start with Sew Hip, then go to Quilter’s Market. Hopefully, you are lucky and have timed it just right, getting to Quilt Basket right before you are hungry for lunch. In their plaza, you will find coffee and some great food options. (Cactus Quilts also has a Row so you can go there before or after.) This is a route I travel often. I hope it works for you. Let me know how it went.
I can’t wait see see what you make with the Sewing Sound Waves Row by Row pattern, so tag me in your photos on Instagram and use #SewingSoundWaveRow. If you use #BrownBirdDesignsCreations and show off one of my patterns, you will be entered into a different quarterly giveaway.
My wish for you is one of luck and happy sewing.
