Fields of Flower – A Colorful Take on a Row Quilt

Fields of Flower – A Colorful Take on a Row Quilt

I first released the Fields of Flower quilt as part of the Great Jelly Roll Bash in 2024. I can’t believe it has already been six months! Jelly Roll Day falls on the third Saturday of September, and since I’m all about the quilting life, celebrating a quilting holiday makes perfect sense, I always throw a party for the occasion. But it just hit me—I haven’t shared Fields of Flower my row quilt on the blog yet!

Me and my Fields of Flowers row quilt. I am over it, holding the top edge so it is hanging.

One reason for the delay? This quilt is BIG. It wasn’t quilted initially, but that changed for QuiltCon. I wanted to display it in my booth, so I reached out to a quilter I know, Kathy Mac from Pink Chalk Studio. She is an amazing, award-winning quilter, and I am so honored to call her a friend. She is starting up a long-arm quilting business. Together, we chose a beautiful vine panto that adds the perfect touch of movement and texture. Don’t you just love how it turned out? The panto she used for this quilt is called Pyrex Stems. I just love how it complements the fabric and the quilt design.

Fields of Flowers

I really wanted this quilt to reflect a meadow you might stumble upon while taking a day hike through a national forest. I started with a row of flying geese and added a couple of pinwheels spinning in the breeze. Then, I included a few tulips popping up to wave in the wind. Next, there are some oversized pinwheels that could provide a little clean energy but also resemble flowers. My personal favorites are the lollipop flowers—they just make me smile! A fun take on a log cabin block. Finally, there’s the ground cover—tiny flowers that are as playful as a checkerboard.

Each section is so much fun to make! One thing I love doing is strip piecing, which helps everything come together more easily and quickly. Feel free to change the order of the rows, make two of one row, or leave out another—the sky is the limit with this quilt!

I wanted to give you so much in this design, so the size is a little larger, but don’t worry! If you’d like to make a smaller quilt, the pattern includes a separate set of instructions for a throw-size version.

The Fields of Flowers Quilt is hanging on a shipping container so you can see the whole quilt and all its rows.

I always have a hard time figuring out what to do with Jelly Rolls that have many colors in them, and this is the perfect quilt for that type of jelly roll.

A Perfect Jelly Roll Quilt

For this quilt, I used Favorite Flowers by Ruby Star Society—a playful and fun line. On the warmer spectrum of the color chart, it includes blacks, browns, burnt oranges, and purples, contrasted with pops of color like green and pink. Such a yummy color combination! It’s a fantastic collection for a quilt like this, which features a wide variety of colors and different hues of each. Plus, I adore how Ruby Star Society releases collaborative fabric lines, meaning this one includes designs from all the talented artists of Ruby Star Society.

A Row Quilt with a Twist

Fields of Flower is my take on a row quilt, featuring a mix of playful motifs. The top row represents the sky with flying geese, while below, you’ll find tulips, pinwheels, lollipop flowers, and ground cover. This Queen-size quilt truly has it all! But if a Queen-size feels too big, don’t worry—I included a throw-size version as a bonus to the pattern.

The back of the quilt is also a row quilt

The Quilt Back – A Stash-Busting Win!

For the quilt back, my goal was to use only fabric from my stash. I had several yards of a rich brown fabric from Fat Quarter Shop that I originally bought for another design. Over time, I realized that design wasn’t a priority, so the fabric found a new purpose as the background for this quilt back. I also had some gorgeous greens and yellows that played together beautifully. While the back doesn’t perfectly match the front, it complements it in a way that works. To add a little extra interest, I structured it as a simple row quilt, with some rows wider than others for a bit of contrast. I love making a fun and easy pieced back for the quilt, click here to see more.
